31-Bossman August 15, 2024
In the early 1980s, I worked for Johnson & Johnson developing cardiovascular catheters. My boss was a fellow named Bruce. He was tall with a round face, a walrus mustache and was bald on top with frizzy gray hair. His clothes were holdovers from 1970s mod (think ScoobyDoo or Mod Squad (too young? look it up.)). He knew full well that he reminded people of a clown but he did not care. He was the best boss ever. He told me once that his job as my boss was to make sure I had all of the resources I needed and that he would run interference for me with the bureaucracy. He was good at his job. That comment stayed with me and I always tried to be that boss. I don’t think I ever told my son about Bruce but I think he must have observed how I treated people and followed suit. I see him in the shop working with the employees and I know he really cares about each of them. I think he is now probably the best boss ever.
